Duties
The commission shall assist, in completion of applications for state and federal veteran benefits.
The director administers a small relief budget, approved by the county board of supervisors, for eligible poor or indigent veterans and their dependents/survivors. The commission may provide short-term assistance with the necessities of life normally including shelter, utilities, medical, groceries or other life sustaining needs. The commission shall provide funeral payment for eligible poor or indigent veterans and their dependets/survivors in an amount established by the county board of supervisors.
The director shall secure from the undertaker in charge of the burial, a grave record for each veteran buried in the county. One copy of the grave record shall be forwarded to the Iowa Commission of Veteran Affairs. A copy, maintained by the county commission, shall be recorded alphabetically and by cemetery where the veteran is buried.
The director shall assist in processing applications for placement of veterans/dependenets/survivors in the Iowa Veterans' Home, Marshalltown.
The director may refer veterans/dependents/survivors to other agencies for assistance.
The commission maintains an office on the ground floor of the courthouse. Office hours are 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday or any time with prior coordination. As the office is normally very busy, appointments are appreciated.
